Walking the streets on the plain and knowing that a 7-11 now sits where Chamberlain spent the night in the swale is sad, but somehow reminds me that life goes on…I am a preservationist, but at the same time expecting the town to stay forever locked in 1862 may be a little unrealistic.Country Roadshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05751646911990677725noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31912334.post-20062227634770744462021-12-10T15:11:02.744-05:002021-12-10T15:11:02.744-05:00Balderdash! There was a small fee to watch the movie once, but not now.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02456060088028209619noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31912334.post-55583911289581436942021-12-09T13:19:42.126-05:002021-12-09T13:19:42.126-05:00Returning from a visit/vacation on Hilton Head Isl...Returning from a visit/vacation on Hilton Head Island we stopped to visit the Civil War site. We arrived early and the office was closed and we toured the wall and monuments on our own. When finished the office was open and they said we should not have toured the site on our own as there was a fee for doing so. We went into the building and watched a film about the conflict which bragged about killing 13,000 New Yorker's and did not favorably speak about Abraham Lincoln. Walt Whitman served as a field nurse during that bloody battle and lived to speak about it. Sad a few men can decide that 600,000 men should die for a lost cause invested in profit on both sides to preserve slavery.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13426302572279878997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31912334.post-24863784094648162462019-12-10T20:02:14.194-05:002019-12-10T20:02:14.194-05:00I visited the site back in 1999 with family. Also enjoyed the monument to Kirkland (a fellow South Carolinian) and spent about an hour there.
Loved your story sir. Well done.
Last year I wrote a blog post on my own site about the battle and Kirkland, as well as a few other personalities on both sides who fought. Be sure to check it out if you can, I'd love your opinion:
http://southernfriedcommonsense.blogspot.com/2018/12/the-angel-of-maryes-heights-sergeant.html C.W. When I brought college students from Louisiana on a staff ride years ago, we found the people and town so inviting. We attended Church, ate, and visited all the sites. To this day, they mention that experience as one of their best college memories. My great grandfather and his younger brother were in the last charge to get closest to the wall in the 134th PA Infantry regiment. We tried to find where they were deployed and were moved by the fear they must have felt. When I got home I grabbed a pen and paper and a long poem began pouring out into words of my thoughts and emotions. Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05357002923561227619noreply@blogger.com
