I was given this as a gift not too long ago. We think it's a Civil War ammunition pouch, but we haven't seen anything like it in any of the Civil War books I have. Any thoughts? Please post here!Saturday, August 19, 2006
Help wanted: What is this?
I was given this as a gift not too long ago. We think it's a Civil War ammunition pouch, but we haven't seen anything like it in any of the Civil War books I have. Any thoughts? Please post here!An Antietam scene
Here's where Justus Wellington. a private in the 15th Massachusetts, crossed Antietam Creek on Sept. 17, 1862. Justus was killed in the West Woods, probably later that morning. Another "great" picture using my cellphone camera. Nope, that's no an alligator in the photo. Looks like one, though!

Not Civil War, but...
...it's my blog!I work a few blocks from Dealey Plaza, where JFK was shot in 1963. Earlier this week, I decided to test out the ol' cellphone camera to see what kind of shot I could get of the Texas School Book Depository, the building from which Lee Harvey Oswald allegedly shot the president. The famous sixth floor window is at upper right.

63rd Pennsylvania soldier
Last year I purchased a ninth-plate tintype in a case of a Pennsylvania soldier named David Mehaffey. David, a member of E Co. in the 63rd Pennsylvania, was wounded at Petersburg on June 18, 1864, had his leg amputated and died on June 19. He was buried at Meade Station, Va.The 63rd was involved in the Peninsula Campaign and fought at Gettysburg on the second day. Sixty-third Gettysburg monument is pictured above. I found David's name (below) on the massive Pennsylvania monument during my last trip to Gettysburg in April. Pretty cool.
I'll post a picture of the tintype soon. David's name is scratched into the plate.
